P:ANO When It's Dark and It's Summer (Hive-Fi Recordings; Canada) $9 Somber pop-like stuff from a Canadian bunch led by songwriter Nick Krgovich. The arrangements are surprisingly tight, with an emphasis on acoustic instruments. But there are also touches of synth beep and guitar feedback.

PENGO Pengo Climbs the Holy Mountain (Carbon Records) $8 "a document of Pengo‘s 5th live performance ... The performance consisted of a live musical accompaniment to the first 31 minutes of Alejandro Jodorowsky‘s film The Holy Mountain. The first 31 minutes of The Holy Mountain are without dialog. This is the section of the film they chose to play along with. This portion of the film is also considerably less linear then the rest of the film. This perfectly suited Pengo‘s music making aesthetic. The only thing constant is continual change. There are recurring symbols in the film that pass by so fast that they are almost subliminal to the viewer." [internal code: GH / EF]

pexbaA (Disposable Thumb Recordings) CDR $15 Aavant-rock combo from Brazil. They walk a thin line between composition and improv, with odd rhythmic gestures and jazz-like playing. They have a disciplined-yet-free style that reminds me of Czech bands like DG-307 and MCH Band during their most creative periods. But you can also hear Ubu, Beefheart & Zappa, early absurdist-punk vocals, horn a la Don Cherry, a bit of South American bounce, etc. Out of print--Disposable Thumb Recordings is defunct.

PRISCILLA Ouzel Dead File #3: Priscilla 1997-1998 (Ouzel Records; Italy) CDR $9 From the Ouzel archives come the complete works of this short-lived Italian band. Priscilla was a cool post-Sonic Youth/post-post-punk combo with the focus on noisy guitars and droney tunes. From their split came down-folk singer-songwriter Onq and the band Morose. Almost an hour of music here.
