on Laurel Canyon Boulevard" / "Basket Case" / "To You He's Just
a Cop But to Me He's Mr. Right" / "Hey, Heavyweight!" (mono)
(United Artists Records) 5-song EP $30
Released 1971. Legendary rock writer John Mendelsohn led the
L.A. group Christopher Milk in the early 70s. This promo-only
EP was their first release. It comes in a nice package: heavy gatefold
sleeve that opens to reveal a photo of the band on one side and the
song lyrics on the other side. The record itself comes inside an inner
sleeve that has a photo and vital statistics for each band member. There's
also a separate fold-out insert with liner notes by Ben Edmonds.

CLAW HAMMER
"Candle Opera"/"Drop" (Sympathy
For The Record Industry) $14
For me, this is just about the best thing
this L.A. band ever did. This is the original
band with Jon Wahl, Chris Bagarozzi, Rob Walther,
and Rick Sortwell. A personal historical note:
"Drop" has a reference to the early Crawlspace
lysergic crew--something about "Flowers and the Cowgirls
on a trip" (i.e., yours truly Eddie Flowers + Lazy
Cowgirls Keith Telligman and Allen Clark, who were
also in Crawlspace). SFTRI 17. Pressed on red vinyl.

COSMONAUTS HAIL SATAN
Mortuary Sorcery (Suggestion Records;
Germany) $10
Horror-movie dialogue + synth freakin' + trance drums
= side A. But side AA ("The Last Vibration of the Seventh
Eternity") is where the action really is. Electronics
and drums explode freely for a few minutes in a
way that reminds me of Coltrane and Rashied Ali on INTERSTELLAR
SPACE. 1996 recordings by this English group.
