THE FLESHTONES
(as "Thee Roman Gods")
"San Francisco Girls"/"Panic"
+ The Next Big Thing fanzine $15
Freebie single with 1987 "10th Anniversary
Ish" (issue #23) of Scottish editor-publisher
Lindsay Hutton's lovingly hand-lettered
garage-punk zine. The Fleshtones cover songs
by the Fever Tree and Otis Williams. The zine
is 116 pages; approximately 7.7" x 7.7"; with
cover art by J. D. King; Angry Samoans piece by Eddie
Flowers (who?!); a fictional biography of Big Daddy
Roth's Rat Fink and a "review" of David Lynch's
Blue Velvet by future Sympathy for the Record
Industry anti-mogul Long Gone John; the Ronnie Dawson
story; interviews with Screamin' Jay Hawkins,
Phil Alvin of the Blasters, and the Tell Tale Hearts;
Sister Ray (the Ohio band); Angst (SST band); the
Skeletons; the Hard-Ons; Baboon Dooley comix; early support
for C&W outcast Steve Earle; Union Carbide Productions;
Art Fein; Gary Pig Gold; Evan Johns & the H-Bombs; Vertical
Pillows; lots of reviews; etc., etc.

FRUITCAKE
"Anna Marina"/"Moanin' the
Blues" (Pit's Bull Records; Belgium)
$6
1993 single by St. Louis band featuring Mike
DeLeon (Drunks With Guns, Stangulated
Beatoffs). The A-side has big fuzz-overload
guitars and lots o' riffin' crunch. The
flip is an instrumental that reminds me of a jam
from the Magic Band's Mirror Man LP, caught right
in the middle of an angular yet melodic passage
that gets repeated until it becomes trancelike.

FRUITCAKE
"Patty Lane"/"Story of Life"
(Skin Graft Records) $6
St. Louis band led by ex-Drunks With Guns/Stangulated
Beatoffs bassist Mike DeLeon. This
is a 1993 release packaged inisde a 12-page
comic book of twisted art. "Patty Lane" is
a tribute to 60s teen queen Patty Duke with distorto-stun
guitars wigglin' about nicely. The flip is
an even nicer bit of cracked-up psych-pop shoved
through the Fruitcake grinder. Released 1993.
